No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) at Government Medical College & Hospital, Omandurar, organized a special community awareness program titled “No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights” on 26th September 2025, as part of Deafness Week (20th–26th September).

The event aimed to highlight the importance of sign language as a vital means of communication, identity, and inclusion for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

Prof. Dr. Mary Nirmala, Head of the Department of ENT, addressed the gathering and emphasized that sign language is not merely a tool of communication but also an essential aspect of cultural identity for the deaf community, preserving their traditions and values.

The program was presided over by Dr. Thiruvengada Senthil Kumar, Medical Superintendent, who spoke on the crucial role of sign language in safeguarding human rights, dignity, and equality. Dr. Saravanan, Resident Medical Officer, further emphasized the need for inclusive education, employment, and social opportunities for individuals with hearing impairment.

Key Highlights of the Event:
  • An Otology Quiz was conducted for final-year students, with five teams participating. Three winning teams were awarded prizes.
  • A poster presentation on deafness awareness was organized for nursing students from KGH, with prizes awarded to the top three entries.
  • Awareness sessions were conducted by the HOD, Assistant Professor of ENT, and Aud iometrician for hearing aid beneficiaries, focusing on deafness rehabilitation and cochlear implant awareness.
